Saraland
The Land earns regional recognition, and Saraland has good reason to be proud
Local perspective from Kelli Salter · Camellia Real Estate Group, brokered by eXp Realty
The Norman H. Walton Sr. Regional Award recognizes more than a new sports complex. It reflects the scale of Saraland’s investment in recreation, community life, and its future as a North Mobile County destination.

Saraland has received regional recognition for one of its largest quality-of-life investments: The Land Sports & Recreation Complex on Celeste Road.
The City of Saraland was honored with the Norman H. Walton Sr. Regional Award from the South Alabama Regional Planning Commission. The award highlights projects across Mobile, Baldwin, and Escambia counties that demonstrate regional value through problem-solving, innovation, cooperation, quality of life, and the effective use of resources.
That description fits The Land because the project was never intended to be only a collection of ball fields. It was planned as a place where local recreation, youth sports, community programs, fitness, tournaments, and visitors could all meet.
What the award recognizes
The recognition matters because it places Saraland’s investment in a larger regional context. The Land represents a reported $72 million public investment across approximately 100 acres, making it one of the region’s largest public recreation projects.
Its indoor and outdoor facilities are designed to support everyday local use as well as larger events. The official facility information includes indoor courts, a walking track, fitness and multipurpose spaces, outdoor fields and diamonds, racquet courts, trails, and gathering areas. Programs, schedules, memberships, and event access can change, so residents should confirm current details directly with the facility.
“The Land is not just a sportsplex. It is a statement about where Saraland is heading.”
Kelli SalterWhy this is bigger than sports
A recreation project of this size touches more than athletics. Its value is also found in the routines and relationships it makes possible.
- More places for families to gather through practices, games, programs, and community events
- More opportunities for young people to train, compete, recreate, and grow through teamwork
- More regional visitors arriving for tournaments and events
- More activity for nearby restaurants, lodging, fuel, shopping, and service businesses
- A stronger identity for Saraland as a destination, not simply a place people pass on I-65
Those outcomes are not automatic, and one award does not settle every question about long-term operations or economic impact. But the recognition confirms that regional leaders see The Land as a meaningful example of public investment and community development.
What it signals about Saraland’s growth
When people say Saraland is growing, this is the kind of change they mean: stronger public amenities, larger community gathering spaces, and new reasons for families and visitors to spend time in North Mobile County.
The Land joins the city’s schools, established neighborhoods, new construction, local businesses, and interstate access as part of Saraland’s broader story. It does not replace the practical questions that matter when someone is considering a move: commute, property condition, school eligibility, insurance, taxes, and monthly cost still require careful review. It does, however, add a significant quality-of-life resource to the picture.
Public amenities can make an area more useful and appealing, but they do not guarantee a particular home value or investment result. Evaluate every property on its own facts and verify the details that matter to your plans.
For people comparing communities around Mobile, the award is one more reason to look closely at what Saraland is building and how the city is positioning itself for the years ahead.
A local project with regional reach
Mayor Joe McDonald has framed the project as an investment in Saraland’s growth, opportunities for residents, and its role as a regional destination. The Walton Award reinforces that message by recognizing The Land through the lens of cooperation, quality of life, and effective public resources.
As someone who grew up in Saraland and returned to build a real estate company here, I am excited to see that momentum recognized. The best local updates are not simply announcements; they help residents and future neighbors understand what is changing, why it matters, and how it may shape everyday life.
